Redoubt Bay Lodge opens for the season in June! If you’ve been searching for the best place to see bears in Alaska, the timing couldn’t be better. The lodge sits 70 miles southwest of Anchorage on the edge of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. Bears are already moving through the area, and a full season of wilderness adventures is ahead.
Getting here is part of the experience. A floatplane departs from Anchorage or the Kenai Peninsula and crosses Cook Inlet with views of the Chigmit Mountains. It then touches down on Otter Lake, right at the lodge’s front door. The flight alone is worth the trip.
Your Stay at Redoubt Bay Lodge
The lodge sits on a five-acre private parcel within a 268-square-mile critical habitat area. It is, in fact, the only overnight accommodation in the region. Five lakeside cabins are each heated by a woodstove and serviced daily. The hand-hewn log main lodge is where guests gather for meals. A private chef prepares breakfast, a hearty midday lunch, hors d’oeuvres, and dinner each day. Complimentary house wine, beer, and an all-day coffee bar round out the experience. Dietary restrictions are accommodated with advance notice.
Our Bear Viewing Tours
From the lodge, a naturalist guide takes guests out by boat for close-range views of coastal brown bears and black bears along the shoreline. No binoculars required. Redoubt Bay’s proximity to the coast means salmon arrive earlier here than at inland viewing destinations, drawing bears in numbers that hold strong from opening day through the end of the season in late August.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor to Alaska or a returning guest, Redoubt Bay Lodge delivers what people mean when they say they’re looking for the best place to see bears in Alaska.
